10 things to do with abandoned goals

10 by 10 on Tuesdays

Did you see the stat in Quote of the Week:  Groundhog Day?  That 88% of those who had made new year resolutions had already dropped them?  I don’t have a stat on this, but I can guess that  most goals are dropped at that high rate.

It’s understandable.   Most of us get all excited about the new challenge and adventure ahead.  And then – it gets hard or boring or life just gets in the way.  Or sometimes we just forget.  And then those of us who shared our goal with others  are embarrassed and want to go underground.  At least long enough for everyone to forget.

In celebration of Groundhog Day, I invite  you to come out of hiding and stay out, at least long enough to consider these 10 things that can be done with abandoned goals.    If you don’t see anything here that would enable you to re-adopt any abandoned goals,  feel free to go back under whether the hog does or not.

1.  Apply Why 5 to your goal.  If it fails, dump it and spend your time and energy on a goal that passes Why 5.

2.  Write your goal down.  Share it with others if appropriate.   This is a MUST if you want others to help you reach the goal.  If you aren’t sure about this,  read  10  dreams doomed to fail

3.  You know that saying…a goal without a plan is just a wish? For helpful plan-making questions, see #6-10 of 10 questions for goal seekers

7. Don’t believe you have what it takes? Maybe you just need a reminder because you really ARE great.  And because you probably still won’t believe it or remember it,  put these to work:  10 sentences for better leadership.

8.    Affirm your way to goal

9.   Mind the gap

10.  Don’t have the right tools, people, economy?    Go now.  Just go. Unless you are content dealing with the same damn thing over and over.

11.  Bonus Item – Get a good coach to help you.  Be sure he or she is a Goals Guru with plenty of hands on experience at setting and achieving challenging goals.
