As a take charge, make it happen leader, you most likely have a long list of things you want to do this year.
It’s good to make such lists, sort through the choices and then prioritize so that you can to do what’s important to you. If you don’t, someone else will do it for you. And then all of the sudden, the year will be over and ….you’ve done nothing that was important to you.
Lots of take charge, make it happen leaders are so busy making these choices and helping their teammates do the same, that they don’t stop to think about who they are being.
I remember the first time I ever heard: We are not human doings. We are human beings.
It’s stopped me
DEAD
In
MY TRACKS.
I was proud of all that I was doing. All that I was accomplishing. All my team was accomplishing.
But not very proud of who I was being.
Nothing terrible or mean or immoral or illegal.
Just wasn’t being best me I could be.
I needed to stop more. Do less. Go outside in the middle of the day and soak up some sunshine. Breathe in the fresh air. Look at the horizon.
I needed to go with a pal to have a bowl of soup. Laugh about stupid stuff that happened on the way to work.
I needed to dig in the dirt. Dance. Paint. Sit on the front porch and listen to the birds.
There was a lot of doing in all of that. And breathing. And smiling. And connecting. And laughing.
Felt more like a human being than a human doing.
It was good for morale and productivity. Performance. Mine and my team’s.
It was quite a revelation for me at the time. One I re-visit often.
How about you?
Are you being the best you you can be?
