This week’s 10 by 10 on Tuesday is in celebration of National Checklist Day.
Some people view checklists as confining. Those who swear by them, find them freeing.
My view – they can be both. If used effectively, checklists can be powerful take-charge tools, enabling us to do things like:
- gain better control of repetitive tasks
- gain better control of our our time
- help us make our goals and expectations clear with others
- give us a way to measure progress to goal
- give others a way to measure their own progress
Below are 10 favorite and frequently used checklists.
Caution: It’s important to review checklists periodically to make sure they haven’t crossed the line to confining…or insulting…or a big fat waste of time. Now – on the heels of National Checklist Day – may be a good time to do that. We offer a few guidelines at the bottom of this page.

- Is this checklist freeing or confining?
- Does it boost morale or bust it?
- Does it boost productivity or bust it?
- If it’s the first choice in #1-3 above, keep it and tweak it if needed.
- If it’s the second choice in #1-3 above, toss it.
