Lack of movement is a good thing for a manager to monitor. It can mean all sorts of things. Maybe time is being taken for a much needed rest or reflection. That’s usually good for morale and productivity.
Lack of movement could also mean stagnation and the breeding of unwanted creatures. Or it could mean that something (like morale) is dying or dead and soon to be rotting. With productivity close behind.
Also be on the lookout for unproductive movement like round-and-round or hither-and-yon. Busy-ness is not good for business if it doesn’t move you forward.
So it’s a good idea to check in frequently. With yourself and with your teammates. Use questions like the ones posted beneath our Quote of the Week on moving forward to examine what could be holding you back. You might only find a mole hill but that’s it’s a lot easier to move before it becomes a mountain.
Sometimes you won’t be able to get rid of whatever it is that’s holding you back. Weather and the economy come to mind.
And that brings us to the most important part of the exercise – identifying what you can do to move forward. Even if it’s a teeny tiny baby step toward your definition of success – whatever it may be.
