Looking for the Good: A Leadership Lesson from Coach Bill Guthridge (shared by Phil Ford)

Our Quote of the Week  from Vince Lombardi:

“The greatest accomplishment is not in never falling, but in rising again after you fall.”

So yes – we’re going to fall.  And if we don’t, we aren’t trying very hard.

But man – sometimes it hurts.  Sometimes we don’t have the energy to get back up.  Many times we really question ourselves and our abilities.

Our Quick List this week includes 10 Tips for Getting Back Up.

In this post are a few additional tips  – for when you are the manager or coach and you have more than just yourself to pick up and keep up after a fall.

These additional tips come from a Business Class interview a few years ago, during which I had the pleasure of talking with former Carolina basketball player and coach, Phil Ford.    We were looking for parallels – lessons from the court that could be applied in business.

Phil praised  the coaching job done by Bill Guthridge in 2000.   The regular season record was something like 13 and 18, not a normal situation for Tar Heel players and fans.  Ford described the team as a “wounded duck”.

But he said that Guthridge kept team together and believing in themselves.  Always staying positive and finding the good.  In the media, he took all the heat for the team’s performance saying things like,  “I’m not pushing the right buttons.  We have a good team and good players.”

Carolina went to the NCAA tournament – made it to the Final 4.  Ford said, “To this day I have no idea how we made the Final 4.  It was brilliant what coach Guthridge did that season.”

Hear it from Phil in this 3 1/2 minute excerpt  from the interview.

What Phil Ford described was a coach that kept the players loose.  Kept them pumped up,  Not letting them get down on themselves.  Yet staying tough, not letting them slide.

 Positive, yet stern.

A powerful one-two punch for pushing and pulling a team to its potential.
