When you go after a goal, you’ll fall down a time or two. If not, it’s not a very challenging goal. Either that or you aren’t trying very hard.
So let’s assume it’s a very challenging goal and that you are trying very hard and that you have crashed to the ground.
Pay attention to the Quote of the Week from Vince Lombardi:
“The greatest accomplishment is not in never falling, but in rising again after you fall.”
Getting back up is often easier said than done.
Here are 10 things you can do to help yourself get back up. Try them all. Practice them. The more you do them, the more you will trust yourself and their effectiveness. And the faster you’ll be able to get back up and at it – whatever it is.
1. Remember why you are trying to do this thing. Do this by reviewing the answers you wrote to questions #1a – 1d below. If haven’t written them yet, do so now and keep them in a handy place for quick review next time you fall.
A. Why is “this thing” important to you?
B. Why is your answer to 1a important to you?
C. Why is your answer to 1b important to you?
D. Why is your answer to 1c important to you?
E. Why is your answer to 1d is important to you?
F. If you haven’t already done so, write down your answers to A-E and keep them in a handy place for quick review next time you fall.
In case you are asking yourself why all the why’s? …. here’s an example. Sally is working with her team to develop a new product line and it’s getting tough. Long hours, short tempers, exhaustion. She’s ready to bow out and then remembers the above questions. Here are her answers. A. “This thing”, this new product line is important because I need a source of revenue. B. A new source of revenue is important to be because it will help me get a bank loan. C. Getting a bank loan is important because I need to hire more people. D. Hiring more people is important because I would like to spend less time on my business. E. Spending less time on my business is important because I want to spend more time with my kids.2. Review your tracking log of critical activities for success. Congratulate yourself for the areas in which you are doing enough. In areas where you are falling behind, do those next, now.
3. Make a list of obstacles that get in your way. Strategize how to overcome these.
4. Post inspirational quotes like the one below on your computer screen, bulletin board, car visor, etc.
5. Review your warm fuzzy file.
6. Go for a walk or another physical activity to get the blood and oxygen and endorphins flowing.
7. Listen to your energy theme song.
8. Eat something healthy like a spinach salad, apple and/or bowl of soup.
9. Write down why you want to quit; what it will feel like if you quit and what it will feel like if you succeed instead.
10. Ask a friend, colleague or coach for help.
