Feel Like You’re Herding Cats?

Ever find yourself wishing your team would do something different?  Act different?  Be different?

I sure have.  And this quote has helped me through many of those times.  It popped into my head this week when I looked at my calendar and realized that December 15 is Cat Herder’s Day.

Effective team leaders provide what the group cannot provide for itself.

If you are waiting for your team to do/act/be different, you may be waiting a long time because they may not know how.

So – you can keep waiting. Or you can be the one to do/act/be different –  and provide for them what they can’t provide for themselves.

Perhaps they just need to be told or reminded of the main thing.

After that, perhaps it doesn’t matter which path the “cats” take, as long as they end up at the right place at the right time. If that’s the case, you could tell them that and ride along instead of trying to “herd”.

While riding, of course it would be important to:

  • stay in tune with the environment to make sure it’s one in which people can motivate themselves.
  • keep an eye out for strays.
  • watch cat fights – and to see if they can straighten it out on their own. And if not – step in to provide positive reinforcement, appreciation or recognition.  Or perhaps reminding them of the main thing.

Provide what the team can’t provide and they will love you for it because it will help them focus, accomplish and achieve.

Great for morale. Great for productivity. Great for a happier holiday season.

Post this quote (instructions below) as a reminder of the importance of environment.
