Everywhere I go, people are stressed. And with the holiday season just around the corner, I can see it swelling up in people.
A good time to remember this favorite quote:
Years ago during an especially busy time, I was running around like a crazy person. My manager said to me, ¨Why would anyone want to follow you if you are stressed out and out of control?¨
Whoa – what a wake up call!
As leaders we must be able to manage our own stress and help others do the same.
How do you react to stress?
Some people cut back on activity and commitments.
Some hire help.
Some switch jobs.
Even after making such changes, some people still feel stressed until they change their their own internal reaction to it.
It could be a decision to let stress go which could be supported by five minute rituals like deep breathing, stretching, meditation, Heartmath, music or walks around the block. Finding ways to laugh usually helps as well.
A leader can help the stress levels of the people on his/her team by:
- making roles and responsibilities clear and measurable
- showing commitment and interest in their success
- providing coaching and support – including coaching them through priority clashes
- giving recognition
- showing appreciation
- making work fun
