We’ve all been there. Scared of something. Often the unknown. Imaginations running wild with negatives that are certain to happen.
Here are three common scenarios.
1. Ready to make a presentation, have a tough conversation, launch a new product.
What if we mess up? What if someone gets mad? What if no one likes it? What if no one buys it?
After all, we aren’t very good at this. We don’t know what we are doing. It’s a terrible product. Our customers don’t like us. It was a stupid idea anyway. We have a way of coming up with dud products. It’s a miracle we are still in business. In fact, maybe we should just quit.
2. We see lots of meetings going on but we don’t know what they are about. It must be something bad or we would know. It must be layoffs or maybe we’ve been sold. Or maybe we’re going out of business.
3. You turned in a big project to the boss last week and haven’t heard a word. Every time you see the boss in the hallway, she looks down. You must have done something wrong. What if you get fired? What will you do? How will you pay for college?
Whether we are the ones in these situations or leading others who are…we need to get everyone out of that room ASAP because the longer we stay there in the dark, the more real that “evidence” will seem. And the more we will worry and fret. Until – we just decide to quit.
Like our friend Vinnie says,
“I work in the dark. YOU should NOT!”
