Thanks to several Leadership Quote of the Week Subscribers who requested quotes on dealing with chaos. Here’s a good one.
Clutter and chaos could have to do with paperwork, procedures, policies, e-mail, to-do-lists, meetings, maybe even mixed with layers of CHANGE!!!
Whatever it is…to cut through the clutter and chaos, zero in on the last word of that quote: “goals”.
To cut through clutter and chaos, ask yourself, “What is my goal here?”
And then, “Based on my goal, what are the most important things for me to do?”
To help your team cut through clutter and chaos, ask them, “What’s our goal here?”
And then, “Based on our goal, what are the most important things for each of us to do?”
Answers don’t always come easily but once they do, they have a way of calming some of the chaos and clearing some of the clutter – or at least making it seem less important.
For reinforcement…eat some celery. I recently read about its calming affect on the body and mind. Pass out celery sticks at your next staff meeting. Even if it doesn’t work to calm the chaos, it’s such an odd staff-meeting-snack, they would likely laugh about it and you know what they say about the power of nonsense and laughter.
Post this week’s quote as a reminder about what to do in the midst of clutter and chaos.
