It’s Not Change That Scares Us

Thanks to several Leadership Quote of the Week Subscribers who requested quotes on change.  Here is a personal favorite.

People usually laugh at this one.  Nod their heads and say, “So true.”.

Besides posting this one, perhaps sharing it at a staff meeting, what else could leaders do with these words of wisdom?

How about carrying the metaphor beyond the words of the quote?

What if we view the physical, mental and emotional chaos involved with change as that time between trapezes?

Instead of chiding people for being resistant to change, what if we thank them for hanging and encourage them to let go for all the many reasons we’ve decided to make a change?

What if we remind them that we will be there with them between trapezes – helping them manage the chaos and the fear?

What if we remind them of the security net below?  Better yet – what if we reinforce the net – or get a bigger one?

And what if we remind them of how wonderful it will be when they are successfully swinging on the next trapeze?  In addition to the change-specific benefits – there will be the joy of achievement –  and of course recognition, as the crowd will be in awe.

Then there is the more simple, less dangerous yet still scarey part of the metaphor.  Linus’ security blanket was dirty and stinky and HAD to be washed; the wet blanket dried.  During all of that, he has nothing to hold on to.  What kind of support or encouragement could we provide to help Linus feel more secure?

One way would be to post (instructions below) these words of wisdom…as a reminder that there are many people out there with nothing to hold on to.  We can help each other a lot.
