I love it when a subscriber sends me something – an article, a quote, a comment, a question, a suggestion, a candy bar :). I love the thought behind it and the resulting connection. And it gives me an idea of what would be helpful to others.
Just last week, a long time Business Class subscriber sent me an article entitled: 10 Essential points about the Boston Marathon bombers, Islam, and America.
While reading it, this quote came to mind. You may recognize it, since it’s been featured here before. Now seems like a good time to share it again.
Yet – we know it IS true, don’t we, that people are lazy, managers are mean, meetings are boring, mistakes are bad, budgets are restrictive and that department down the hall is definitely incompetent.
Such generalizations often guide decisions and actions – and may cause us to blame the wrong person, department, system or situation for whatever has gone wrong. Or cause us to overlook information, opportunities, projects, people and connections that are rich with possibility.
They may also cause team members to head in opposite directions. Or to simply be at odds. Which is usually bad news for morale and productivity.
Read this little “poem” at your next staff meeting and post it on the wall as a reminder:
- that things aren’t always one way or the other – or “black and white”
- that the “in between” or “gray” areas are rich with possibility
- that our views aren’t necessarily “right”
- to consider other views
- to discuss them with others
