Key to Less Hate & More Serenity

This week’s quote can provide fuel for boosting morale and productivity on your team, in your organization and beyond.

If people laughed more, they might hate less and find more serenity here on earth."

The actual quote by English journalist, author and media personality, Malcolm Muggeridge is,
“If only men could be induced to laugh more, they might…”

I modified it for brevity, for inclusion of all people and because “induced” sounds forced to me.

What can we do, as leaders and people, to laugh more and encourage others to do the same?

If you have the gift of being funny, good for you!
What if you don’t?

Lots of leaders are so serious about achieving their goals (a good thing), that they forget about the power of laughter (not good).  Once reminded, they can lighten up from time to time, then look for and see the humor in things.   A leader with a ready (and appropriate) laugh can change a culture.

Another way to encourage or stimulate laughter is with celebrations, traditions, games, contests and other events.  There are several great opportunities coming up this week and next because of NCAA basketball, Easter and April Fool’s.  Get more detail on our March Celebrations page.

Warning: If you choose to do any of these things, you may feel like a fool. Your teammates may roll their eyes. But they will laugh too. And that will lighten the load, break the tension and maybe even bring people closer together. Not just today – but down the road as they think about or talk about the day that ___________ (fill in the blank).

Post this week’s quote as a reminder of the power of laughter.

If you haven’t already done so, sign up here for a Monday morning BOOST for you and your team – the Leadership Quote of the Week delivered to your email box each Monday morning.
