In celebration of Columbus Day and Kick Butt Day…
Ever since Vinnie got back (that’s his mug below), he’s been asking everyone he sees…
ARE YOU SCARED TO LEAD?
Those three things led to the selection of this week’s quote on the subject of FEAR.
Imagine what it was like for Columbus during his treacherous journey through uncharted waters to America. Dealing with naysayers, rough seas, claustrophobia, disbelief, discouragement, sickness, death and the threat of death. A journey loaded with fear of things real and imagined.
We have it easy by comparison, but our fears are still real. Fear of:
- The unknown
- Being wrong
- Doing the wrong thing
- Rejection
- Appearing to be a fool
- Losing our jobs
Such fears can keep us from being real leaders – from doing critical leader activities like:
- Setting challenging goals
- Choosing a “different” or unknown path
- Staying on this path when others question us or call us crazy
- Holding team members accountable for fulfilling responsibilities and achieving goals despite obstacles like rough seas, sickness and discouragement.
- Working with them to identify obstacles in their way, some of which may very well be associated with the same fears listed in #1-6 above
- Helping them explore and discover ways to overcome these obstacles, so that they can do their jobs
If you aren’t doing the above, you aren’t doing your job as a leader.
Could it be…is it because…
ARE YOU SCARED TO LEAD?
- think of Christopher Columbus on a crickety old boat crashing through the open sea with no land in site.
- think of how fun it would be to be a “Kick Butt” leader and have a “Kick Butt” team.
- imagine staring Vinnie in the eyes, pointing your finger at him and saying, “No way am I scared to lead.”
Then – when you are ready, gather your team for an exploration of fear. But facing fear isn’t so easy. Get detailed instructions on how to loosen everyone up for such an exploration in our ready-to-go meeting plan called Scary Work I. It tells you how to introduce this week’s quote to:
- Shed light fear, which is on one of the biggest obstacles to achieving goals.
- Provide support and reinforcing tools for pushing through the fear.
