This week’s Quick List* is a companion to our Quote of the Week: Using All Gears?
Here are 10 questions to help you evaluate your use of “gears” which could mean a world of difference to morale, productivity and overall performance.
1. Are you using all of your “gears”?
2. Come to think of it, when talking about life, instead of bicycles, what does “using all gears” mean? Possible interpretations include:
- the speed of operation
- the level of effort or engagement
- skills
- desires
- anything other interpretations?
3. Do you use the same gear all the time?
4. Do you consciously and intentionally decide which gear to use or is it based on how much energy and time you have?
With questions for yourself like…
5. How much effort is truly needed for this project, task, etc? Can you coast a bit? Or are the stakes so high that you must push, push, push?
6. How fast must you go on this project, for this task, for the next 10 minutes? Some people seem to be fastfastfastfast all the time. And have a hard time slooowwwing down long enough to listen, observe or enjoy the scenery.
7. How fast could you go so that you could just be done with it? Some people go slooowwwly for everything. Thinking things through. Considering the options. Making sure it’s done right. When some things could be done lickety split. Just like that. Done.
8. Do you smoothly move between from speed to speed and level of effort throughout your work day and week?
9. What about talents, skills, gifts and interests… are you using yours? Or are you skipping over them until you get over this next hill? Or some other excuse?
10. What about talents, skills, gifts and interests of your team members? Do you know what they are? Are they getting to use them? Are you brave enough to ask them?
