February is American Heart Month, declared as a reminder to take care of the health of our hearts. Three primary ways to do this: diet, exercise, regular medical check-ups and stress management.
With the latter in mind, we selected an ancient Hawaiian huna (or “secret”) of life as our Leadership Quote of the Week: Energy flows where attention goes.
What are you paying attention to?
- The unfortunate events of your childhood?
- All the faults of your spouse?
- The person who cut in front of you on the highway today?
- The bad review you got last month?
- All the budget cuts that are keeping you from doing your job?
- The despicable actions of a team member you despise?
- The lack of cooperation from upper management?
While a bit of venting on such situations can be helpful and healthy, if we give them continued attention, we’ll get sucked into a continuous flow of negative energy which usually leads to a downward spiral of morale, productivity and overall performance. Bad for the heart of a business. Bad for the heart of each person in it.
Strong leaders recognize such cycles and know how to break (and prevent) them – decisively directing attention toward positive thoughts, feelings and/or desired end results.
With continued attention on the positive, the old negative cycle will be erased and replaced by a new one.
A positive one.
While the cycle looks the same in blue box #2 & blue box #4 (above), the effect is VERY different. lnstead of a downward spiral for morale, productivity and performance, there is a big boost. One that’s good for the heart of a business. And good for the heart of each person in it.
Have you ever broken a negative cycle and converted it to a positive one? Please share in comment section below or by sending an email to: Jan@BusinessClassInc.com.
And then, come back tomorrow for 10 Ways to Break the Cycle.
Meanwhile– post your favorite version of this week’s quote as a powerful reminder that can help the heart of a person. And the heart of an entire business.

*According to folklore…when a groundhog comes out of its burrow on Groundhog Day, he/she will stay out if it’s cloudy, signifying that winter-like weather will soon end. If it is sunny, the groundhog will see its shadow, go back underground and the winter weather will continue for six more weeks.
