Just received this from Tech Wizards, thought it was helpful and wanted to spread the word.
Prevent Damage To Your Computers This Weekend!
With Hurricane Irene and her high winds and rain on the way to the Triangle, Tech Wizards recommends that you consider taking precautions to protect your computer systems and other expensive electronic devices from damage resulting from any power issues, flooding, or fallen trees that may impact your location.
Power Outages, Power Flashes, & Power Surges – If you have a Uninteruptable Power Supply (UPS) battery backup unit for your computer(s) or server that will automatically shut down the computer after a power failure then you probably have nothing to worry about. If you don’t have such a unit (“power strips” or “surge protectors” don’t count), or if you are unsure if the battery is still good or if the unit will automatically shut down the computer, then you should strongly consider powering down the computer and then unplugging it from the power source before the hurricane is expected to hit. Also consider taking this action for TVs, stereos, cable boxes, DVRs and other expensive electronics. You can then plug your devices back in and power them up safely after the storm passes.
Flooding – If your location is subject to flooding then you should strongly consider powering down all electronic equipment (including computers, UPS/battery backup units, etc.) and raising them off of the floor to a sufficient height to prevent them from getting wet in the event of flooding.
Fallen Trees – If computers and other expensive electronic devices are positioned in your home or business where they could be damaged by a tree falling down onto your building then consider moving them to a different location prior to the arrival of high winds and rain.
When it comes to expensive/critical computer systems, servers, and other expensive electronic devices, it is “better to be safe than sorry”. Taking a few precautions before the wind and rain of Hurrican Irene arrives may save you considerable money and computer “down time”
