This week’s quote is a nice follow up to last week’s quote about every horse being good for something.
Of course, we hire or hope we have hired winners, right? “Winners” meaning people who do their jobs and do them well.
What if Mr. Winner was just hyding Dr. Loser during the hiring process? Or what if one of our winners all of the sudden loses it? Or what if we inherit a loser?
There are lots of ways to handle losers. Too many times, leaders make the mistake of ignoring it – hoping the situation will go away. Big problem because believe you me – the others on the team are NOT ignoring it. They see a teammate not doing his job…and YOU not doing yours. A double whammy drain on morale, productivity and overall performance.
Other common ways of handling losers – writing a person up or docking his pay may be necessary, but done with no other action simply reinforces the label of loser. Which usually means continued loser behavior. Which often means more write ups and eventual firing, after which the leader says, “I didn’t have any choice.”
About most of these cases, I say, phooey on that. The leader could have done his job of leading…which includes getting out from behind the process and out from under the paper and digging deep to find the real problem that’s causing the loser to show up instead of the winner. And then working with him to fix that problem. Or if it can’t be fixed, working with him to find another job internally or externally.
Doing that shows a winning leader at work.
