Quote of the Week from Coach Dean Smith

In celebration of March Madness, we have selected a quote from  Coach Dean Smith.

Quote of the Week from Dean Smith

A longer version of the quote from Coach Smith:   “If you make every game a life and death proposition, you’re going to have problems. For one thing, you’ll be dead a lot.”

Thought/Discussion Questions:

  1. Whatever the game…what problems can be caused by treating every situation or too many situations as life-and-death matters?
  2. What games (or situations) in your organization should be treated as life-and-death matters?
  3. How would your team members answer the question?
  4. What would be the value of you and them having the same answer?
  5. What actions will you take to get your answers synchronized?

Answer Key:

1.  Possible problems (not a complete list)

  • we (leaders) get too tired
  • we get too stressed
  • our team members get tired and stressed
  • they may stop listening to us
  • which means they are not engaged
  • morale goes down
  • productivity goes down
  • overall performance goes down

2.  This answer has to come from you.

3.   You can take a guess at what they would say.   We also suggest you ask them.

4.  The value of you and them having the same answers  – less of the problems listed in #1.

5.  This is up to you.  And them.  If you need help, let me know.   Meanwhile, for reinforcement,  we invite you to  print and/or post this quote on your computer screen as a reminder about life-and-death matters. See how-to’s below.
