A friend of mine invited friends over for an anti-aging social. After mingling over refreshments for a bit, we sat and listened to some tips from a local acupuncturist.
One of the tips was on tapping. She said it would help us avoid the need for botox for another couple of years. All we needed to do was tap for 10-15 minutes each day. Sounded reasonable to me. I was willing.
When it was over, Laura and I walked out together and she said, “Now just WHEN are we supposed to do all of this?”
“It’s only 10 minutes”, I said.
And then Laura said something along the lines of, “But in addition to tapping for 10 minutes, I have to drink my water, take my vitamins, eat 5 fruits and vegetables, exercise, stretch, write in my gratitude journal and meditate. If I do all that, I won’t get to work until after lunch. And then I’ll be in such a rush, there’s no way I’ll be the patient, nurturing, fun, creative problem solving manager I was hoping to be this year. And no way we will make that sales increase we really need so that we don’t go out of business.”
There was a bit of exaggeration in her funny joke…and a bit of truth.
It’s easy to overload on our good intentions for improvement. Sometimes before we even get started.
Some tips on get and stay started?
There are a variety of reminder and reinforcement tools that I share with clients – all designed to help implement intentions, do it consistently; and fit it in with all the other stuff without going to the other side….of being a human doing instead of a human being.
These tools include:
- daily affirmations
- a daily success checklist
- computer wallpaper
- e-mail reminders
- the help of a coach
- knowing when to quit
I’ll share more details tomorrow.
Right now…it’s time to do some tapping.
Meanwhile – do you have any tools to add? Tools that have helped you deal with Goal/Resolution Overload?
