One year ago on this very day, I sat in the kitchen, looked at my to do list for the weekend and wanted to either scream, cry or go lay down on the sofa.
I tried to put on my happy face and get on with paying the bills, updating files and sorting through remnants of the holidays.
But Happy Hannah had had it.
Knowing who usually steps in when Happy Hannah goes on leave, my husband wisely intervened.
He said, “If you could do anything instead of your to do list, what would it be?”
My answer, “Something totally different.”
“Like what”, he said.
I said the first thing that came to mind, “Go ice skating.”
I had only been ice skating twice in my life. The last time was 17 years ago, when I fell and broke my wrist. So I was surprised by my answer.
And surprised by his.
He said, “You want to go ice skating? I’ll go ice skating with you.”
And so we went.
He hadn’t been ice skating in 30 something years. We had never been ice skating together. It was a blast. And nothing got broken.
Except the monotony.
And when we got back home, it was much easier to take care of my to do list.
Why share that here at Business Class?
As a reminder to take-charge, make-it-happen, inspirational leaders who have a tendency to keep their noses to the grindstone:
- to take a break from the grindstone every now and then.
- to encourage teammates to do the same.
- to ask complaining teammates, “What would you like (to do) instead?” and if possible grant that wish.
- or to even take a proactive approach and do something totally different just for the sake of doing something different. Ice skating is certainly a possibility. After all, January just happens to be National Ice Skating Month! For additional ideas, see Related Articles below.
