Working, shopping, wrapping, decorating, cooking, partying…it’s enough to make you sick.
And tired and stressed and maybe even a bit Scrooge-like.
Have you ever gotten that way? I sure have.
For some reason, when Ryan was six years old, I thought to ask him, “What is most important to you during the holidays?”
His response: “It really doesn’t matter much Mommy – as long as I get to stay home and make cookies with you.”
So — we made cookies. Not lots of different kinds or even fancy kinds.
Just sugar cookies.
With icing.
And LOTS of sprinkles.
Yes – there were sprinkles everywhere!
We’ve done it every year since – thankful for the time together, the great cookies.
And the broom.
Because it’s so easy to get swept into the holiday frenzy, it has also been a tradition to re-visit this story and to share it with others as a reminder to save time and space for the most important people and things – including sleep.
Over time, it has become less important to Ryan to stay home and make cookes with me. Now that he is nineteen, I don’t think it’s even on his “C” list.
But the cookies are still very important to me. They remind me to keep things simple and fun during the holidays.
It’s not an easy thing to do but…would you like to join me?
