There was a helpful article in the News & Observer (Raleigh, NC) today, written by Leah Friedman: “Take these etiquette tips and pay them forward”
Some have said that people are tipping less now because of the economy. This is sad because as Dave Roberts, a professor at Kenan-Flagler Business School said, “The sorts of jobs people tip for have a low base salary. People are dependent on the tips.”
Ms. Friedman interviewed Lizzie Post, great-great-grandaughter of Emily Post. An interesting point she made is that if you get bad service, it’s better to talk to the manager than just give a low or no tip. The latter doesn’t fix the problem. As managers, we can certainly appreciate that perspective.
In addition to information about regular tipping, she gives helpful information about holiday gifts. A good read: Take these etiquette tips and pay them forward by Leah Friedman
Follow up note: Ms. Friedman’s article triggered lots of questions and lots of good answers about tipping and gift giving. You can see that here: Tipping Point: Who Gets One?
