Years ago, I was making a birthday cake for a colleague at work. Yellow cake with chocolate icing.
The layers were just out of the oven and needed to cool a while before the icing went on. But it was late, I was tired and so…
Big mistake!
As I spread the icing , big pieces of the yellow cake layers ripped off. I tried to “glue” it together with icing but it looked terrible. The more I tried to fix it, the worse it looked. I thought about starting over but I really needed to go to bed.
So – I dumped the entire iced cake into a big silver bowl and chunked it up a bit with a knife. Then got vanilla ice cream out of the freezer, waited long enough for it to soften, dumped it on top of the cake and spread it all around until it was nice and smooth. A few chocolate sprinkles and some light blue candles topped it off and then I stuck the entire bowl into the freezer.
Voila!
Everybody loved it! The appearance, the taste and the story about how it came to be.
For the next birthday, I managed to make a cake without it falling apart.
That was a big mistake.
Everyone wanted Mistake Cake!
So from then on – I made Mistake Cake on purpose.
Each time served as a reminder for all of us – of the cool things mistakes can bring.
