80% Perform Below Capability

Here is more in support of our Quote of the Week: Expect A Lot. Excellent tips for managers who want to build morale and productivity. And get better results.

the people principle

According to Ron Willingham, author of The  People Principle, “80% of your people are performing far below their capabilities right now.”

Look at the missed opportunity there!

Imagine how much more productive our organizations would be if everyone was performing at a higher level.

Imagine the boost to morale!

Here are three fabulous snippets from Ron Willingham’s  The  People Principle .

  1. The People Principle: People have unlimited potential that has been largely unrecognized and untapped.    When discovered and accessed, this potential can lead them to  far greater levels of productivity than they ever imagined,  causing them to feel better about themselves and enjoy life more.”   ( from page 1)
  2. “People will rise to meet the level of your expectations of them.  Set thoroughbred expectations for people and they will perform nearer that level.  Set plow hourse expectations and they will perform accordingly.”  (from page 55)

So – be sure to Expect A Lot!

If you don’t…don’t be surprised when the Law of Limited Performance kicks in.

3.   “The Law of Limited Performance – People soon discover the level of performance their managers will settle for and then gravitate to that level.  Managers then assume that’s all that people are capable of achieving, so they accept it as fact and quit challenging their people to get better.  So both reinforce what the other believes.”

Excellent reminders of the power managers have.  And the responsibility they have to:

  • Expect a lot from people
  • Believe in their ability to achieve the expectations
  • Provide the training they need
  • Provide consistent coaching and support
  • Have a coach of their own

By doing so, they get better results.

A win-win for all.
