10 Steps to Get Marching

10 by 10 on TuesdaysSo…there is something you’ve been planning or wanting or hoping or meaning to do – something on the business or personal side of life like:

  • getting more exercise
  • getting new clients
  • cleaning out the file room
  • networking more
  • doing more MBWA (management by walking around)

But you haven’t done anything yet.

All kinds of things make it hard to get started.  Fear, other demands, lack of a plan, just being plain old stuck.   Or maybe some get 2 goal guru (like yours truly) overwhelmed you with a strategic planning model of some sort.    If you want to break through whatever it is that’s holding you back, here are your marching orders.

10 steps to get marching in 5 days:

1.  Congratulate yourself for all the things you HAVE done.  All the parts of your life in which you are marching right alongl.

2.  If you haven’t already done so, post  the Quote of the Week about marching along on your computer screen, bulletin board, car visor, etc.

3.  While I think it’s good to have an action plan, if you are stuck on the sidelines because of the lack of one, forget the plan for now.   Action is critical right now.  Do something, anything, just to get started.   Now!  For example:

  • If you want to get more exercise, go for a brisk walk today, even if it’s just around the block, or even if it’s just for 5 minutes.  Just do more than you did yesterday.
  • If you want to get more clients, make 1 appointment with a new prospect today or 1 more than you did yesterday.
  • If you want to clean out the file room,  clean out 5 files or spend 10 minutes cleaning out files.  Just do more than you did yesterday.
  • If you want to network more, get a networking activity on your calendar this week.
  • If you want to do more management by walking around, get out of your office for 5 minutes today, or for longer than you did yesterday.

4.  Record the activity on your calendar with celebratory exclamation points!!!!   For extra credit, make notes about why it felt good to do this.  For more extra credit, make notes about the long term benefits of continuing to take this action.

5.  On day #2, repeat  all of the above.  If you have a hard time getting yourself to take the action in #3, re-read the quote (in #2) and re-read your notes (in #4).

6.  On day #3, repeat all of the above.

7.  Repeat on day #4.

8.  Repeat on day #5.

9.  Hopefully you are feeling some  momentum now.  If so, your plan for continued action may have become obvious.  I encourage you to write it down, along with your definition of success.  If you aren’t sure how to do this, be on the look out for our Road Map for Success program – soon to be available online.  Or check out our Get 2 Goal Coaching Programs.

10.  If you are still stuck, re-visit the reasons you thought you wanted to do this.  We suggest a process called “Why Five“( covered in Road Map to Business Success program).  By going through this process, you dig deep into the reasons for wanting something.  For many people, their answers to these questions serve to nudge, push, pull – whatever is needed to help them get and keep marching.  Note:  If  you find that the reasons for doing this aren’t strong enough – ditch it.  Scratch it off your to-do list.  It will free up all kinds of physical, mental and emotional energy that can be used to get marching toward other, more desirable pursuits.
