For you and those you coach or manage – a helpful hint from the racetrack.
As you know, along the way to goal, there are all kinds of obstacles that block our path. Or twists and turns that can throw us off course – distracting us and causing us to go off in other directions. Or scaring us so that we stall or even abandon the once sought-after goal.
Can you imagine being a race car driver?
Driving 190 miles per hour.
Going around those turns.
All those cars around you.
About to crash at any moment.
I once read an interview in which Richard Petty shared a few lessons he had learned from his Dad. His Daddy told him that the most important thing is to look far ahead so you can see trouble at the earliest opportunity. And then – when entering a turn, tap the brake pedal gently, allowing the car to take its set. And then stay on the accelerator and drive through the turn. He explained that people get into trouble when they go into the corners too hard and then jump on the brakes.
Great lessons for us in business as well.
o Decide on a goal.
o Prepare.
o Plan.
o And then YOU’RE OFF!
o Looking way ahead for trouble.
o Here we are about to make a turn. Oh my – this is scary. I’m going too fast. I wanna stomp on the brakes so bad. But NO. If I do, I’ll spin out and crash into the wall. C’mon stay on the accelerator. Drive thru that turn.
