They will be there – GIANTS in your path

Might as well accept it…

“Between you and anything significant will be giants in your path.”

Between you and anything significant will be giants in your path.

Which giants do you see most often?

I see and I hear about these a lot:

  • Tommy Time
  • Buddy Budget
  • Patty Paperwork
  • Cranky Cathy
  • Doubting Debbie
  • Edith Economy

Each of these real or imaginary giants, plus others on a very long list,  can, do and will reek havoc on morale and productivity by causing people to stop in their tracks,  throw up their hands, take detours, or worse – decide it was a stupid path anyway.

What to do about it?

For many people (including myself), it helps a lot to:

  1. accept that such giants are out there.
  2. expect them to show up.
  3. believe that their presence is not necessarily bad news.
  4. know that their presence isn’t necessarily real.
  5. know (or at least pretend until you can convince yourself) that they can be fun to be around.
  6. know that even if they aren’t fun to be around, it can be really fun to get around them.

What to do when you find one in your path?  Here are some tips.  Got any to add?

  1. Don’t panic, hide or shrink away in fear.
  2. Name the giant.
  3. Consider whether or not it’s just in YOUR imagination.
  4. Remember why the path being blocked by the giant is important to you.
  5. Don’t hesitate to repeat the “why” in #4 to yourself over and over.  This will give you strength to do #6.
  6. Tame, train, tie down or be-friend this giant so that you can work your way around over it or around it.
  7. Want even more strength?  Get your team involved.
  8. And if you haven’t already done so, post this quote as a reminder that yes – there will be giants in your path.  And…so what?  You are ready.
