Only 17 days til Hanukkah, 21 days til Christmas, 22 days til Kwanzaa, and only 27 days left in the year.
It can be a wacky time. Running in a million directions. Too many directions. Not getting anything done and/or not doing it well.
This week’s quote is a great reminder for leaders everywhere.
What IS the main thing?
It’s a tough question. We’re responsible for so many things. How in the world can we identify THE main thing?
One strategy is to answer the question by role and by time frame. For example – what is the main thing at home? What is the main thing at work? What is the main thing today? This week? This month?
Each of us will answer differently. And that’s okay. Unless it’s not okay.
If you lead a team and if there is something specific that your team, department or group needs to accomplish between now and the end of the year – then it’s critical that you are focused on that as the main thing. And it’s critical that everyone on your team is focused on that same main thing.
So – what is the main thing for your team in December?
Adding new business? Collecting year end receivables? Getting the office packed up for a year end move? Enjoying the holidays?
Based on what you consider to be the main thing for your team, what is the main thing for each person on your team?
If we asked each person on your team the same questions, would their answers be the same as yours?
If not – it’s not okay. And it means that your main thing is to let them know right away that of all the many things that could be the main thing, this particular main thing is the main thing for December.
They will love you for it because it will help them focus, accomplish and achieve. Great for morale. Great for productivity. Great for a happier holiday season.
