The Man on the Subway

I once heard a story about a man on the subway with four young children.  He just sat there while the kids ran wild.  The man said nothing to them…just stared into space.  Other passengers on the train couldn’t believe how slack he was being with his kids.

His bag fell on the floor and he didn’t even notice.  A stranger picked it up and handed it to him.   He looked up at her…a bit dazed and said, “Oh….thank you.  I’m sorry.  I’m a bit distracted.  We just came from the hospital.  My wife…their mother… just died.”

Whenever someone is “behaving” in a way that upsets us – whether they seem slack or rude or mean or whatever….

That doesn’t mean we have to put up with or accept the anger or meanness or slackness of others.   The above quote provides a different frame of reference…usually a more caring, helpful and productive one.
