In reference to our Quote of the Week: Time for a New Start?, we offered 10 Lists Leading to New Endings. Here is another resource. A simple question that often brings about a new ending.
The question is: “Why do we do it that way?”
Terry Hamlet, President of S.H. Basnight & Sons, shared this story with me a few weeks ago.
Years ago, when showing her how to cook a ham, Terry’s mother said to cut the end off of the ham before putting it in the pan.
When Terry asked the reason for cutting the end off the ham, her mother said, “I’m not sure. That’s just the way my mother did it.”
When asked the reason for cutting the end off the ham, Terry’s grandmother said, “Because the pan wasn’t big enough.”
“Why do we do it that way?” was the start of a new ending for the end of the ham.
It could be the start of a new ending for you too.
All the things that you do at your office…starting with the problem areas…
“Why do you do it the way that you do?”

Hey Jan:
This story is a great analogy for what I see people do every day – makes me crazy. But it was fun to see it in a context where I could laugh about it.
Thanks for sharing – hope you’re doing well!
