Karate Kid is our Movie of the Week because of all the hoopla about the new one (which I haven’t seen yet). But the old one has served as a management model for me for years.
It shows the patience needed for teaching new skills, the encouragement needed during discouraging times, the discipline needed during rebellious times, the push needed for break throughs. And when The Kid wins and everyone rushes around him in celebration…
and his coach stand off to the side beaming with pride…
Wow!
That’s what I feel like when I’ve been on the coaching side of a victory like achieving a big sales and earnings increase; realizing a major company culture shift; winning an award or landing a big promotion; or any major break through.
Is that how you feel when you are the manager or the coach or the Dad (or the Mom – but hey – it’s Father’s Day)?
Grab some popcorn and watch the clip below. And if you haven’t seen the entire movie, watch it and you’ll get some great tips on management style.
