When I was in sales, I remember complaining with my colleagues about things that interfered with our performance. And the longer it went on, the lower the dip in our morale and productivity. It was stuff like:
-
“If only the economy wasn’t so rotten, we could sell more.”
-
“If only the deadlines weren’t so tight, we could sell more.”
-
“If only there was more time in the day, we could sell more.”
When I became a manager, I got a taste of my own medicine. The “if only” game. Not just from the sales staff but from other departments as well. It served me right from a what- goes- around- comes- around perspective.
The “if only” game.
Can you imagine an athlete saying one of these?
- “If only the basket wasn’t so far away, I could score more.”
- “If only the ball wasn’t so small, I could score more.”
- “If only the field wasn’t so long, we could score more.”
- “If only there weren’t so many players in my way, I could score more.”
- “If only the other team wasn’t so good, we could win.”
While it helps to vent about the things we can’t control – like the size of the ball or court or field – or like the economy or competition, it doesn’t much good beyond that.
Better to focus on getting better at our jobs, doing enough of the the right things so that we achieve our goals.
And what about the things that interfere with that?
Ah yes.
If only we could change that, we could REALLY perform!
Yes we could.
And yes we can.
Put these resources to work so that you and your team can push through the INTERFERENCE to better PERFORMANCE.
